[Noob] Spanning Tree admin-edge-port vs admin-pt2pt-mac

Sorry, just trying to clarify something in my mind.  If I'm setting a port to "spanning-tree 802-1w" I would use admin-edge-port for devices and admin-pt2pt-mac for other switches?  Is one or the other better if you're not sure what's getting plugged into the port?

Thanks.

Re: [Noob] Spanning Tree admin-edge-port vs admin-pt2pt-mac

Hi,

So as you already know ports configured as admin-edge-port should be configured for ports connected to end stations and have the following characteristics:

  • Not expected to receive any BPDU
  • Port flapping will not cause any STP topology changes
  • Will become designated port role

And ports configured as admin-pt2p-mac should be connected to other another port through a point-to-point link i.e. another switch and will behave as follows:

  • Expected to participate is spanning tree
  • Port flapping will most likely cause STP topology changes
  • Will increase speed of convergence

If a port is configured as edge port and BPDU is received then 802.1W will automatically transition to non edge port for this port

So if the port is most likely to be connected to an end station best option is to configure as admin-edge-port

Hope this helps

Regards

Mick

So when in doubt, admin-edge-port?

Will setting ports with end devices as admin-pt2pt-mac cause issues?

Hi,

I would suggest when in doubt, simply do not set the port role, leave the port configured as default

See the following for show 802-1w explanation to confirm port roles http://www.brocade.com/content/html/en/configuration-guide/FI_08030_L2/GUID-54C6B84D-FC89-4C0E-BE2B-EEA706706F94.html
