When Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005, it flooded 92 percent of Singing River’s hometown of Pascagoula, Miss. While the hospital was able to muster its generators to continue operating despite a four-hour power outage, it dramatized the disruption that a network outage can inflict on a place where uptime is truly a matter of life and death.
