It’s been a busy year for both Openet and Brocade in offering fully virtualised pre integrated solutions, allowing the operators to deploy them as an adjunct, low risk, high value offerings into their network. One of the areas we see as offering potential new revenue is the IoT market. However it is such a wide and varied area with various characteristics and performance demands, and it is difficult to predict the return on investment, therefore investment in this area needs to be low risk and low cost of entry. The market is changing quickly and the ability to react to this change efficiently in a timely manner is critical.
The IoT Market The IoT market is predicted to grow at a huge rate with various use cases appearing in different market segments, but the take-off is quite varied and operators need to be careful in controlling the investment towards Internet of Things. With a wide range of service characteristics and performance requirements, it poses new challenges as well as huge potential opportunities. It is important to provide a common platform that can support the various IoT markets with flexibility without needing to re-design the network.
How can operators begin their journey into IoT? The operators have well established connectivity and many other advantages for many different types of use cases relating to mobile IoT that make them ideal for partnering with IoT customers but are limited by the high cost of providing these kind of services on their existing infrastructure and the inflexibility of exiting infrastructure. One way of overcoming this limitation is by deploying an efficient dedicated network which leverages virtual technology that capitalises on the ease of deployment and reduction in cost for IoT. Take for example the possibility of an operator launching a soft MVNO play targeted at IoT, focusing on a few different use cases:
1) Smart Agriculture Operators can target the agriculture sector with a dedicated MVNO network towards livestock health monitoring, GPS tracking, and other metrics to reduce the cost of breeding livestock. It can also support a sensor network that monitors the water and soil condition, warns any abnormal events that could harm the production of crops, or even finds out the best time for harvest based upon crop ripeness, which would lead to increasing the productivity. Considering there is huge rural area with decent cellular coverage, the agriculture customers can take advantage of this service without having to deploy different types of network and this opens up a completely new avenue for operators.
2) Enterprise Healthcare One of the main drivers for IoT will be in the wearables and the data this generates in relation to healthcare. Operators can deliver Enterprises such offering as a healthcare platform which can track a number of different health indicators from their subscribers. Employees can sign up through the tailored website to track all their health data, which can be sent to the healthcare providers in order to reduce cost.
3) Connected cars Autonomous driving and connected cars would be a norm in a very near future and the connected cars would have quite strict performance requirements including high speed/mobility, positioning accuracy, and telemetry of vehicle information. The nature of these requirements makes cellular network a perfect candidate with its ubiquitous coverage. With an end-to-end solution for connected cars, operators can provide the service to car manufacturers to gather data from cars and communicate any instructions from the server to the cars in a seamless and secure way.
How can Brocade and Openet help?
The combination of Brocade and Openet’s technologies allows customers to deploy a complete adjunct network to handle the evolution of IoT services.
Both systems are completely virtualized and NFV compliant, allowing this network to be deployed on an NFVI or supplied hardware. Through the use of NFV technologies new IoT services can be deployed on the NFVI without recourse to additional infrastructural investment. That NFVI will also be the infrastructure that will host services as they become available.
The provisioning of a new service is all automatically controlled with Brocade’s vEPC providing the intelligent and customizable mobile connectivity and Openet’s Policy Manager dynamically controlling the mobile QoS for the service. Open RESTful interfaces allow for the provisioning of devices. Using both the mobile and provisioning interfaces, many extensible charging patterns can be supported through Openet’s Evolved Charging Suite, which allows for service, usage and a host of other charging patterns that can be applied. The Evolved Charging Suite will interop with the in-house OCS for the production of bills or can produce output itself.
