Vyatta 5400 IPSec performance (Softlayer)

Hello all,

Softlayer offer the ability to order a Vyatta 5400 (V 6.7.6) based on a choice of hardware specification, ranging from Xeon 1270 (4 core 3.4 GHz) to Xeon 2690 (16 cores 2.9 GHz) along with 10 Gb/s NICs. I understand there are many considerations, but what kind of real world IPsec VPN encryption throughput might I be able to achieve using AES?

I am trying to understand what kind of specification of hardware device I might need at the other end of an IPsec tunnel, the remote end from the Vyatta, so as it's not the bottleneck to achieving the best possible throughput over 10 Gb/s NICs.

Thanks for any insight, I've searched for performance figures but can't find anything to do with IPSec.

Regards,

-phil

Hi @phil.dotchon,

I've reached out to some of our engineers to see if they have a number around IPSec...I'll keep you posted.

@phil.dotchon,

I received this response from our engineering team, hope it helps:

"For the 5400, on the SoftLayer server setup, the IPsec throughput will be roughly be around 700mbps."
